With this $25 gadget, Amazon will finally get you to stop scoffing at the idea of a ‘smart home’

Dave Limp, Senior Vice President of Amazon Devices, introduces the ‘smart plug’ during an event at the Amazon Spheres, on September 20, 2018 in Seattle Washington.

Earlier this year, Amazon launched a $25 smart plug that lets you control any outlet in your home by voice with an Amazon Echo. That means you can control any lamp, appliance or anything else that plugs into an outlet by speaking a phrase to Alexa like “turn on the living room lamp,” without having to find a switch. It even lets you add other smarts, like a schedule so the light turns on and off at certain times.

It’s a really easy way to turn a “dumb” home into a smart one that you can control with your phone or by voice. You don’t need to fiddle with complicated hubs or spend too much time trying to get something to connect to your WiFi network.

If you can plug in a lamp, you can get the smart plug working. I’m going to show you how to get the most out of it.

This is the smart plug

It’s very simple. Think of it as a sort of adapter that adds the brains to anything you want to plug into an outlet. It will let you schedule an appliance to turn on and off at a certain time, enable you to turn it on or off even when you’re away from home and let you activate it by speaking to Alexa.

All you need to do is take the smart plug, plug in the appliance to one end —it makes the most sense with a lamp because it’s a simple on/off appliance, but you can use anything from a humidifier to a fan — and then plug it into the wall.

Xiaomi Pocophone F1 Specifications Leaked; AnTuTu Listing With High Score Spotted

Xiaomi Pocophone F1 Specifications Leaked; AnTuTu Listing With High Score Spotted

Xiaomi has been rumoured to be working on Pocophone F1, said to be the company’s next handsetpowered by Snapdragon 845 processor. New details on the specifications of the upcoming smartphone have emerged online, thanks to a leak by an online store and a benchmark listing. The Chinese manufacturer already has four handsets with the Snapdragon 845 processor – Mi 8, Mi 8 Explorer Edition, Mi Mix 2S, and Black Shark – in the market, but now a new handset under the Pocophone brand appears set to be launched. While the latest leak does not show any images of the upcoming Pocophone F1, they do hint at some of the specifications of the handset.

Xiaomi Pocophone F1 specifications

A listing of an alleged Xiaomi Pocophone F1 has surfaced on a Belarusian online store that showcases the smartphone’s specifications. According to the listing on the site, the dual-SIM Xiaomi Pocophone F1 sports a 6.18-inch full-HD+ display with 18.7:9 aspect ratio. It reaffirms the presence of Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC in the handset. It comes with 6GB of RAM.

At the front, there is a 20-megapixel selfie camera with Super Pixel technology and Face Unlock. The smartphone comes in two inbuilt storage variants – 64GB and 128GB – expandable via microSD card.

As per the listing, the connectivity options in Xiaomi Pocophone F1 comes with 4G, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type-C port, GPS/ A-GPS, GLONASS, and Beidou. Sensors onboard are accelerometer, ambient light sensor, and gyroscope. It packs a 4000mAh battery and comes with Quick Charge 3.0 and 9V/2A charger. In terms of dimensions, the Xiaomi Pocophone measures 157.24×75.4x88mm

Meanwhile, a Reddit user has leaked a screenshot of the alleged AnTutu benchmark score of Xiaomi Pocophone F1. The leaked image shows the smartphone’s name as ‘Poco F1’. The image does not reveal the name of the processor, but it is seen to have scored 285,302 points in the listing.

To recall, the brand name Pocophone was trademarked by Xiaomi a while ago, and the company was even reported to be making a flagship device for international markets, especially India, powered by the Snapdragon 845. The smartphone was tipped to be powered by the Snapdragon 845 SOC, run on Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI, sport an 18:9 LCD display with a notch, be fuelled by a 4,000mAh battery, come with a fingerprint sensor, NFC, and sport a dual camera setup with optical zoom support.

In terms of pricing, a recent report had suggested that the Pocophone F1 will come in two variants. While the 6GB RAM/ 64GB storage variant will be priced in Eastern Europe for EUR 420 (roughly Rs. 33,800), the 6GB RAM / 128GB storage model will cost EUR 460 (roughly Rs. 37,000). The smartphone may sport a 5.99-inch (1080×2160 pixels) display, and come in Blue and Grey colour options for international markets.

YouTube Names Handsets Offering ‘Best Experience’, Shows Samsung Galaxy Note 9 on Top With No iPhone on List

YouTube Names Handsets Offering 'Best Experience', Shows Samsung Galaxy Note 9 on Top With No iPhone on List

The list of YouTube Signature Devices includes as many as 18 Android smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 not just has top-notch specifications but is also touted to be a “YouTube Signature Device” for 2019. Samsung at the Galaxy Note 9 event in New York revealed the latest achievement. Following the formal announcement made on stage in Brooklyn, New York, a YouTube Device Report emerged that highlights the Galaxy Note 9 as well as some other premium smartphones as “Signature Devices” that are claimed to deliver the “best-in-class YouTube experience”. Interestingly, while the report includes models such as the Google Pixel 2 XL, HTC U12+, and OnePlus 6- alongside the Galaxy Note 9 as the leader, it doesn’t mention any iPhone model – not even the top-end iPhone X.

YouTube in the Device Report states that to qualify as a Signature Device, the handset must support high dynamic range (HDR), 360-degree video playback, high frame rate (greater than 60 frames per second), reliable DRM performance, 4K decoding, and use next-generation video codecs along with hardware VP9 profile 2 decoding. “We’ve worked with manufacturers to verify these devices meet or exceed our performance expectations,” the team writes in the report.

The list of YouTube Signature Devices includes as many as 18 Android smartphones. There are models such as the Galaxy Note 9, Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium, HTC U12+, OnePlus 6, LG G7 ThinQ, Xiaomi Mi 8, Nokia 8 Sirocco, Google Pixel 2 XL, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, and LG V30.

However, there isn’t any iPhone model, as noted by The Verge. The prime reason behind the absence of the Apple iPhone models in the list of YouTube Signature Devices is the lack of VP9 video codec support that has been developed by Google to enable a high-quality video playback experience. The lack of VP9 support notably prevents Safari users from watching YouTube videos in 4K.

It is unclear whether the 2018 iPhone models will come with necessary hardware and software support to reach the list of YouTube Signature Devices in the future. This also isn’t likely to be a major factor to influence customers. Having said that, companies such as Samsung are likely to use the latest development to market their offerings including the newly launched Galaxy Note 9.

BSNL FTTH Broadband Plans Revised to Offer Up to 3.5TB Data to Compete With Jio GigaFiber

BSNL FTTH Broadband Plans Revised to Offer Up to 3.5TB Data to Compete With Jio GigaFiber

BSNL FTTH (Fibre to the Home) broadband offerings have been revised to now offer more data at faster speeds, in a possible attempt to take on Jio GigaFiber, for which registrations began recently on August 15. Four premium offerings in the BSNL high-speed fibre range of plans have been upgraded – namely, the ones priced at Rs. 3,999, Rs. 5,999, Rs. 9,999, and Rs. 16,999. BSNL has increased both the download limit caps as well as the plan speed for these four. The revised plans will be effective pan India (wherever BSNL has coverage) starting September 1, 2018. Jio GigaFiber plans, on the other hand, have not been revealed yet.

Let’s go over the new revisions to BSNL’s FTTH plans, as first reported by Telecom Talk. The Rs. 3,999 now comes with a download limit of 750GB, speeds of up to 60Mbps, and post-FUP speed of 4Mbps. This compares to a 500GB download cap at 50Mbps in the most recent revision back in July.

The Rs. 5,999 FTTH plan now comes with 70Mbps data access speeds with a limit of up to 1,250GB for the entire month. Post-FUP speed is set at 6Mbps. Previously, this plan came with 1,000GB of data at 60Mbps download and upload speeds. Moving on to the high-ranking Rs. 9,999 broadband plan, it now offers 2,250GB of data access at speeds of up to 100Mbps, compared to 2000GB at 80Mbps in the recent revision. Post-FUP speed stands at 8Mbps.

Lastly, the most premium FTTH broadband plan priced at Rs. 16,999 comes with a humongous data limit of 3,500GB or 3.5TB at speeds of up to 100Mbps. The last revision had brought the plan up to 3TB of data at 100Mbps.

On a related note, DTH service provider Tata Sky in late August launched its high-speed broadband service to take on Jio GigaFiber’s upcoming wider public release. Tata Sky will provide speeds ranging between 5Mbps and 100Mbps with unlimited Internet access.

EU Agrees on Data Deal With Japan

EU Agrees on Data Deal With Japan

The European Union reached a deal on Tuesday allowing businesses to seamlessly transfer personal data between the bloc and Japan, deepening economic links as the two sides also agree a free-trade pact.

The EU and Japan concluded several years of data talks in Tokyo in the margins of a bilateral summit and the deal should come into effect towards the end of this year, once the European Commission and the Japanese government have finalised details.

“Data is the fuel of global economy and this agreement will allow for data to travel safely between us to the benefit of both our citizens and our economies,” EU Justice Commissioner Vera Jourova said in a statement.

“By working together, we can shape the global standards for data protection and show common leadership in this important area,” she said.

The Commission said the decision would mean that personal data could flow from the European Economic Area to Japan, without needing any further safeguards or authorisations.

Cross-border data flows are key to most businesses. These can include moving employee information around, credit card details to complete online transactions, and people’s browsing habits to serve them targeted ads.

However, strict EU data protection rules forbid companies from storing Europeans’ information on servers in countries deemed to have an inadequate level of privacy – only 12 meet the standard – meaning firms have to rely on other more complex legal contracts.

A similar data transfer pact with the United States which underpinned billions of dollars of transatlantic trade was struck down in 2015 by the EU’s top court on the grounds it did not sufficiently protect Europeans’ data from US snooping, throwing the business world into legal limbo.

A new one has since been negotiated and has been in place for over a year.

The EU and Japan last year concluded the world’s largest free-trade agreement, which will make up about 30 percent of global output, and are expected to formally sign it later on Tuesday in Tokyo.

California Bar Shooting: Customers Broke Glass With Stools, Helped 35 Out

California Bar Shooting: Customers Broke Glass With Stools, Helped 35 Out

Matt Wennerstrom said he is a regular at the Borderline Bar & Grill and customers are like his “family.”

In the aftermath of the shooting at a country music bar in Thousand Oaks, California, in which 12 people were killed, survivors are starting to tell their stories of how they escaped through a window with the help of a fast-acting bar patron.

Customer Matt Wennerstrom, 20, told several news outlets that once he saw the shooter open fire, he quickly ushered people behind a pool table.

“There was a bunch of us that were just looking for cover, and we were standing right next to a pool table,” Wennerstrom told ABC News. “And so we got everyone behind the pool table and down, and then there was probably six or seven of us dog-piling over the girls that were beneath us.”

When the shooter reloaded his gun, Wennerstrom said he knew he had a moment to act. He saw someone grab a bar stool and throw it through a window, and he did the same thing, shattering the glass.

“Bar stools go through windows,” he told ABC. “It works.”

Then, he said, he and others pushed down the broken glass and helped about 30 or 35 people out.

“We just stood there basically forcing as many people out as fast as we could until we cleared everyone out and then we jumped out ourselves,” he told the news station. “Then it was just trying to collect everyone and push them down and out of sight and as far away as possible.”

Wennerstrom told CBS News he is a weekly regular at the Borderline Bar & Grill, and the other customers are like “family.”

“We’ve known a lot of these people for upwards of 10, 15 years, we grew up with them,” he said. “It’s not just something where you get out of there and fend for yourself. It’s ‘what can I do to protect as many of my friends as possible.’ ”
