Geek Squad experts give computer cleaning tips

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) – It’s time to give your computers a good cleaning, and not just on the outside.

Monday is National Clean Out Your Computer Day, and Geek Squad experts have some tips to help keep your computer running quickly and smoothly.

Eric Gomez, a Best Buy Geek Squad agent at the Conestoga Mall, said one of the best things you can do for your computer is clean out the cache.

You can do this on a Windows computer by opening up the Disc Cleaner. On a Mac, you go to the “Go” option at the top menu.

“It maximizes performance of the computer,” Eric Gomez said. “It also keeps it more relevant so then you have less issues that occur from update issues, driver issues, not uploading correctly. When you clear up those temp files it removes any of those temp files that were in there from the internet browsers or old updates like I said before”

Gomez said you should clean out those files at least once a month.

But there’s another easy fix to a slow computer Gomez said they see most people have trouble with.

“Always, always update your computer. If you don’t update it you’ll start having issues with the computer. Also, depending on the make and model that you have, some companies use their own what they call “Support Assistant.” Those update your bios, which is a really important thing to update at least once a month,” Gomez said.

He also suggests emptying out your trash and recycling bins to free up space.

The Geek Squad also recommends using a disc optimization tool to identify and delete necessary files. This helps unclog your computer.

If you have any issues with your computer you can’t fix, you can visit with Best Buy’s Geek Squad at the Conestoga Mall.
